Max Brown

Make it stand out

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

ESSENTIAL TIER · AMSTERDAM
Herengracht 13–19, Canal Belt · Nine Streets

Three 17th-century canal houses sit at one of Amsterdam's most photographed intersections — right where the Herengracht meets the Milkmaids Bridge. Max Brown Canal District is what happens when someone decides that a hotel doesn't need a spa or a concierge desk to be worth staying in. It just needs to be thoughtful about the things that actually matter.

The rooms are individually designed — patchwork quilts, restored wood, leather details, soft furnishings that feel lived-in rather than staged. Every room has a Crosley record player, which sounds like a gimmick until you're playing vinyl at 9pm with a canal view and a glass of jenever from the corner shop. The beds are genuinely extraordinary. Late checkouts here are a recurring theme in the reviews, and it's not hard to understand why.

The interior is anchored by a mural by local Amsterdam artist Gino Bud Hoiting and an Instagrammed-to-death book wall that somehow still manages to feel genuine. Tucked behind the main building is a small inner garden terrace — an unexpected pocket of quiet in the middle of the city.

There's no restaurant and no room service in the traditional sense. The hotel's philosophy is that Amsterdam is the restaurant — and given that you're a ten-minute walk from Bloem, a five-minute walk from the Nine Streets, and surrounded by some of the city's best independent cafés and GF-navigable spots, that's not a hardship. In-room pizza delivery is available if you're in for the night.

The Essential tier exists for travelers who are here to explore the city, not the hotel. Max Brown puts you exactly where you want to be — Nine Streets shopping, the Jordaan a ten-minute walk, Anne Frank House eight minutes on foot, Craft Coffee & Pastry (Amsterdam’s dedicated GF bakery) a short stroll — without charging for amenities you won’t use. The room quality punches well above the price point, and the Sircle Collection loyalty program means returning guests accumulate benefits over time.

A note for celiac travelers: there is no kitchen and no on-site dining beyond in-room delivery. This is not a problem in Amsterdam given the city’s GF restaurant density, but it is worth knowing if you prefer to keep breakfast supplies in your room. We recommend packing a few safe breakfast items from Albert Heijn (five minutes away) for mornings when you want to eat in.

Room recommendation for GF travelers

Request a Medium or Large room if budget allows — the Tiny and Small rooms are genuinely compact and work best for solo travelers or light packers. The Extra Large with canal view is the splurge room in this tier and worth it for a longer stay. Confirm room category at booking — room sizes vary considerably across the five types.

What's nearby

Walking distances from the front door:

  • Craft Coffee & Pastry (dedicated GF bakery, Wed–Sat) — 6 min

  • Bloem (Amsterdam's only NCV-certified restaurant) — 12 min

  • Anne Frank House — 8 min

  • Nine Streets shopping — on your doorstep

  • Rijksmuseum — 18 min on foot or 2 tram stops

  • Albert Heijn supermarket — 5 min

A note on the stairs

Canal houses were not built with suitcases in mind. The staircase at Max Brown is steep in the way that all Jordaan canal houses are steep — narrow, with a sharp pitch. There is no elevator. If mobility is a concern, request a ground floor room at booking and we will confirm availability as part of your trip package.

Rates shown are shoulder season estimates. Peak season (June–August) and holiday weekends run higher. All bookings arranged through Parea include preferred rates where available and confirmation of your dietary needs to the property prior to arrival.
